Last March, at the Princeton Club in New York City, the International Federation of Business & Professional Women (BPW International) celebrated its 80th anniversary of empowering women around the world. During the event, they showed clips of famous movie stars and singers of the different eras who have empowered women and been role models for women. In between each era of stars, they played my song, Women of the World!!! I have since recorded 4 versions of the song at the request of the International President, Liz Benham to represent their four official languages: English, French, Italian & Spanish. I have been invited to sing all 4 versions at their next World Congress to be held in Helsinki, Finland in June 2011.
Here is a brief description of their 80th anniversary celebration taken from their website:
The Princeton club which in bygone years had been a private club for men only was transformed back in time to the 1930’s as over 200 members and guests donned period clothing and were highlighted by greetings written by Shirley M. Tilghman, the first woman President of Princeton University. The theme of the evening was “old world glamour”.
The keynote speaker, Manhattan clothing designer Nina McLemore, set the tone by discussing women’s fashion over the eight decades of BPW International’s existence. Throughout the evening dignitaries including Patricia Gatling, Commissioner and Chair of the New York City Commission on Human Rights; C. Virginia Fields, former Borough President of Manhattan and CEO of the National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS (NBLCA) and Town of Hempstead Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby paid homage to this dynamic organization.
It was wonderful to have Past International Presidents Yvette Swan, Sylvia Perry, Pat Harrison and Antoinette Ruegg present at the celebration.
The highlight of the evening was a video capturing 80 years of empowering women. The annual dinner is named after Claire Fulcher, a dedicated member and United Nations representative for over 28 years. Every year the work of past and current BPW International UN Representatives to the various UN Headquarters and Regional Commissions throughout the world are celebrated at this wonderful dinner.
