Music has been a part of my life, well, all my life – when I was 6 years old, a travelling accordion salesman came into our kitchen, had me play a song and told my Mom I had musical talent. I never did get the accordion but my parents eventually bought me a $75 upright piano. I was hooked.
The singer/songwriter life brought interesting gigs like performing for our Olympic athletes in Salt Lake City, USA and Athens Greece; performing at BPW International World Congress in Helsinki, Finland; on a moving train VIA Rail as Artist on Board to British Columbia; opening the World Acadian Congress.
As a keynote speaker, I love sharing my music and my story about going from being a full time Mom living-in-the-country lifestyle to performing my original songs for our Canadian Olympic athletes at two Olympic Games (Salt Lake City 2002 and Athens Greece 2004) in a multimedia presentation called “Living YOUR Dream”.
This Is My Canada/Mon cher Canada
“This Is My Canada/Mon cher Canada” was written in 1992 as a plea to Quebec to not separate from Canada, released on my debut album in 1994 – the same year my daughter was born – and was put on a shelf for 20 years to be a full time Mom/part time musician.
The song has now been re-recorded by Canadian Artists with a combined 6 Grammy & 13 Juno Awards – and has was launched nationally (on my birthday – Happy Canada 150!) and within one month, has achieved 180,000 YouTube views.
I wrote “This Is My Canada/Mon cher Canada” while living in Prince Edward County, Ontario and was thrilled that The Corporation of the City of Prince Edward County adopted another one I wrote called“Waiting to Welcome You” as their official song.
Women of the World
As I love to say, this is my album for all women and for all men who love women. It includes my 85 year old neighbour singing her Christian heart out on Amazing Grace; my 8 year old daughter singing the youth anthem “I Can Touch The Sky” and also showcases songs by 5 Canadian singer/songwriters including my hero, my aunt Angèle Arsenault.
In 2011, I had the honour of singing the title track “Women Of The World” in English, French, Italian & Spanish for the BPW International World Congress in Helsinki, Finland. The album also includes “Angel In Disguise” a song about women fighting AIDS around the world to help raise awareness for the Stephen Lewis Foundation.
I’m An Acadian-Canadian, Eh!
Funny Lady, Deborah Kimmett, concept creator (www.kimmett.ca) and I wrote this show to share my Acadian heritage and culture with English audiences through stories and songs filled with tragic & triumphant tales of a little known piece of Canadian history sprinkled with humour, history & music.
“Proud to Be Canadienne Eh!”
A bilingual interactive show for students from JrK to Gr 8 that includes Acadian history, a songwriting session, line dancing and sing along songs.
Causes Close To My Heart
My first benefit concert that I co-organized/performed in was after the Tsunami in Indonesia in 2005 and with 40 musicians in Picton Ontario, we raised $16,000 in 3 hours on a Sunday afternoon in the month of January. I went on to organize other fundraisers including World AIDS Day in 2006 with 100 musicians, Quinte Unites: Benefit Concert for the Philippines, 2013 and several concerts for Haiti after their devastating earthquake in 2010, to name a few.
I have written many songs to raise awareness and funds for charitable causes such as Quinte Grannies for the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign (Stephen Lewis Foundation); 60 million girls (building schools for girls); the choking game, FASD, The Invisible Army, Syrian Refugee Families, to name a few.
I flew to Haiti in 2011 to visit the school that our Picton organization, The 500 Club, was supporting, came back & wrote “The Sound of Haiti” after reading an article describing the voices in the streets singing hymns through the night after the earthquake.
God is the centre of my life and I know part of my journey includes sharing my Christian & inspirational songs because sometimes music can transcend the spoken word.
I released Christian songs on several albums and released a full Christian album called “Arise” as well as included some of them on an album with my gospel trio, Trinity.
