Musically Speaking

I am a proud Canadian and a proud Acadian. When I was young, I thought that all family get-togethers had uncles, aunts and cousins playing fiddles, guitars, spoons, harmonica, mandolins while the children were encouraged to dance in the middle of the music circle. As I grew older, I remember thinking “What do you mean that you just play the stereo at your parties?”

Music has been a part of my life, well, all my life – when I was 6 years old, a travelling accordion salesman came into our kitchen, had me play a song and told my Mom I had musical talent. I never did get the accordion but my parents eventually bought me a $75 upright piano. I was hooked.

The singer/songwriter life brought interesting gigs like performing for our Olympic athletes in Salt Lake City Olympics (Utah, USA 2002) and at the Athens Olympic Games (Greece 2004); performing at BPW International World Congress in Helsinki, Finland; on a moving VIA Rail train as the Artist on Board from Toronto to Vancouver and back; opening the World Acadian Congress in New Brunswick; and, currently having almost 300,000 YouTube views of “This Is My Canada/Mon cher Canada”:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAYhT5f0i-I

Personally Speaking

My beautiful 23 year old daughter, Kait, lost her 4 year battle with cancer in April 2018.  My life is forever changed and maybe one day I will find my voice again to get back to performing.  In the meantime, I prefer to work behind the scenes creating promotional slideshow videos for my songs and for other artists.  Below you will find several videos and no doubt will recognize the progress from early to most recent ones.  Thanks for stopping by. Please subscribe to my website (bottom of this page) and to my YouTube Channel:   https://www.youtube.com/user/Jamskas/featured.

But mostly thank you for supporting artists & content creators.  You can show your love for your favourite artists by sharing links to our music, videos, websites, social media pages – you make a difference and play a vital role in helping to spread the word.  Nothing like word of mouth!  Be well XO

Kait’s Comfort Kits

Kait and I wrote the lyrics to “Kiss Me Under A Shining Sun” a few years ago and then some wonderful musicians came together to help to turn it into a fundraising vehicle for Kait’s Comfort Kits:   Andy Sparling wrote the melody; Howard Baer wrote the arrangement;  together The Starpainters (including David Reed) recorded it with Lenni Stewart on vocals; Ken Harnden recorded/mixed the song at Pinnacle Music Studios (Belleville Canada) and Katrien Reed designed the beautiful song cover.
And they ALL donated their time and talent! 👏👏👏👏👏Round of applause & Standing O!! 👏👏👏👏👏
All monies from the online digital sales will go to Kait’s Comfort Kits. You can read more about her legacy and this project by clicking the tab at the top right of this page.

Inspirational

Peace and love to all above all.  It doesn’t matter so much where you find your spiritual nourishment but that you spend the time to find it.  Do not underestimate how silence can be the greatest gift to feed your soul.

Music can speak soul to soul in ways simple words alone cannot convey.  Its greatest power is the way it can move through you heal you in ways you cannot adequately put into words –  its something you experience within yourself.

All great musicians and artists do what they love to do – not for you to just see and hear their art but for you to feel it, too.  There is a bond between an artist and a fan that speaks both ways, soul to soul, each feeding the other in a glorious symbiotic relationship of appreciation.

This Is My Canada/Mon cher Canada

“This Is My Canada/Mon cher Canada” was written in 1992 as a plea to Quebec to not leave Canada, released on my debut album in 1994 – the same year my daughter was born – and was put on a shelf for about 20 years so I could be a full time Mom/part time musician.

The song has now been re-recorded by Canadian Artists with a combined 6 Grammy & 13 Juno Awards – and was launched nationally in the year of  Canada 150 and currently has almost 300,000 views.

I wrote “This Is My Canada/Mon cher Canada” while living in Prince Edward County, Ontario (and went to sing it at 2 Olympic Games so I love to tell young up and coming artists:  you don’t have to live in a big city to have some amazing opportunities.  Work hard and dream BIG!

Waiting To Welcome You

I was pleased that The Corporation of the City of Prince Edward County adopted another song I wrote called “Waiting to Welcome You” as their official song.

Women of the World

As I love to say, this is my album for all women and for all men who love women.  It includes my former 85 year old neighbour singing her Christian heart out on Amazing Grace; my 8 year old daughter singing the youth anthem “I Can Touch The Sky” and also showcases songs by 5 Canadian singer/songwriters including my hero, my aunt, the late Angèle Arsenault.

In 2011, I had the honour of singing the title track “Women Of The World” in English, French, Italian & Spanish for the BPW International World Congress in Helsinki, Finland.  The album also includes “Angel In Disguise” a song about women fighting AIDS around the world to help raise awareness for the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

“Proud to Be Canadienne Eh!”

A bilingual interactive show for students from JrK to Gr 8 that includes Acadian history, a songwriting session, line dancing and sing along songs.

“Fière d’être Canadienne!”

Le spectacle bilingue et interactif qu’elle présente dans les écoles inclut des bribes de l’histoire du Canada, un mélange de musique acadienne et canadienne, et beaucoup de joie de vivre acadienne!

Causes Close To My Heart

My first benefit concert that I co-organized/performed in was after the Tsunami in Indonesia in 2005 and with 40 musicians in Picton Ontario, we raised $16,000 in 3 hours on a Sunday afternoon in the month of January. I went on to organize and co-organize many other fundraisers including World AIDS Day in 2006 with 100 musicians, Quinte Unites: Benefit Concert for the Philippines, 2013 and several concerts for Haiti after their devastating earthquake in 2010, to name a few.

I have written many songs to raise awareness and funds for charitable causes such as Quinte Grannies for the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign; 60 million girls (building schools for girls); the choking game, FASD, The Invisible Army, Syrian Refugee Families, to name a few.

I flew to Haiti in 2011 to visit the school that our Picton organization, The 500 Club, was supporting, came back & wrote “The Sound of Haiti” after reading an article describing the voices in the streets singing hymns through the night after the earthquake.

I co-wrote “Welcome To Canada” with singer/songwriter/author/editor Marie-Lynn Hammond (The Stringband) to help raise awareness and funds for the Syrian Refugee families that were invited to live in the Quinte area supported by a loving, caring community of people who make me so proud live in this area.
