Welcome to Episode 6 in my 2024 Monday Music Matters “Song-A-Week” series of stories in memory and in honour of my daughter, Kait.

This week’s song, “Kait’s Waltz” turned into a collaboration between Kait and my co-producer of all the children’s songs, Greg Geeves, of Oxford Studios in Ottawa, Canada.

Song Link: Kait’s Waltz

In the middle of recording this children’s album, Greg played me a lullaby song he had been working on. He said that it had no name yet and wasn’t finished.

Later that session, Kait stopped by the studio and I asked Greg to play it for her because I thought it was so beautiful.  A couple days later, I overheard Kait playing the song on our piano – from memory and from having only heard it twice in Greg’s studio that day.

She had such a steel-trap mind.  Not only did she teach herself how to play it from memory, she sheepishly asked me to listen to what she was inspired to write to finish the song.  I say “sheepishly” because she was hesitant to play it for Greg as it was his song and who was she to add a section without asking him first.   That was her thought process.

Greg was thrilled with her addition and promptly said that we now had a name for the tune:  “Kait’s Waltz”.

This is one of my absolute fave songs.

Special thanks to Jessica Bell and her two sons – Aiden, 11 and Isaac, 8 for their fabulous artwork that they created for this song.
